Car: Pontiac Firebird Formula 400
What makes it special: Happy Thanksgiving ! Here's a bird that REALLY cooks ! This second generation Firebird's F-Body platform was the longest in the models lifetime, running until 1981. The Formula 400 sported a standard 330 horsepower, 400-cid V-8.
What made it famous: A bold split-grille and bumper were combined into a color-keyed "Endura" plastic nose, and twin hood scoops that nearly ran down the length of the Firebird's long hood.
Why I would want one: It's just plain cool, and a departure from the Trans-Am ( Not that the T/A's a BAD thing..I DO love those T/A's ), a change of pace in the Firebird line-up. Love the twin scoops.
Fun fact: Up until the 1979 models, the performance of 400-equipped Firebirds could still be brought up to pre-1970 levels by disabling emissions equipment, removing the catalytic converter and blocking off the exhaust gas recirculation system, also opening up the block off plate to make the hood scoop functional. ( Shhh....)
