Car: Chevrolet Bel Air L-72
What makes it special: An L-72 Chevrolet Bel Air was a "Special order only package." Some were bought up just for its powerful big block V8 engine, which then was removed and installed into something much lighter. Plus, it had a factory tachometer that was only available on an L-72.
What made it famous: It had a factory installed 425 hp, 427 Big Block V8 with a solid cam and 4 bolt main. A great follow up was to order it with a close ratio Muncie M-22 4-speed manual transmission, and 410 12 bolt rear. ( F41 option )
Why I would want one: Because so many L-72 Bel Air's were bought solely for the practice of removing their engine, there are very few original numbers matching 1966 models today....and that spells "R-A-R-E !" ( Extra bonus points for it's "Sleeper looks" with color matching steel wheels and "Dog Dish" hubcaps. )
Fun fact: In 2002, a Bel Air Convertible "Concept Car" was shown at the North American International Auto Show. It featured some styling and design cues like a chrome windshield frame and a gas filler cap behind the tail light, similar to the 1956 -'57 Chevy gas cap behind the chrome trim on the back of the tail fin. Unfortunately though, General Motors has shown no interest in producing the car. Boo.
