AJ's Car of the Day: 1968 Shelby Mustang GT350 Hertz "Rent-a-Racer"
Car: Shelby Mustang GT350 Hertz "Rent-a-Racer"
What makes it special: Due to its popularity as a race-day performer, starting in 1966 Hertz rental car company purchased 1,003 “Rent-a-Racers”, which ended up at rental car locations all over the country.
What made it famous: They were race cars that you could rent over the weekend, etc. Many people would drag race them, then return them to Hertz on Monday. Most were equipped with a 365 hp, 302 V8 , C-4 automatic transmission and a 3.50 rear end. ( Although some 4-speed equipped GT350's were also available.)
Why I would want one: Only 223 Shelby's were ordered as Hertz Cars in 1968, so that means having an original makes it extra special. Plus, since Carroll's Shelby's passing, Shelby Mustangs are destined to climb higher in value. ( Not to mention the obvious "coolness factor" and the performance of a Shelby Mustang. There's that too....)
Fun fact: After their rental-car lives were finished, GT350's were returned to Ford, refurbished, and sold to the public as "GT 350-H" models. During rental, these cars were sometimes used as production class cars, and rumored to have been returned to Hertz with evidence of roll bars being welded in. When the Hertz cars were returned to Ford to be prepared for sale to the public, the high-performance parts were often "lost" before final sale.
