AJ's Car of the Day: 1969 Ford Torino 428 Ram-Air Cobra Jet ( R-Code )

Car: Ford Torino 428 Ram-Air Cobra Jet ( R-Code )

Year: 1969

What makes it special: The Torino was the upscale version of Ford's Fairlane model. Two-door Hardtop muscle car performance models were equipped with the 428 and 429 cu in Cobra-Jet V8 engines.

What made it famous: The Cobra Hardtop 428 CJ equipped models had the Ram Air Induction package, chrome valve covers, dual exhaust and functional hood scoop. Also, when equipped with Ram Air, "428 Cobra Jet" emblems were placed on each side of the hood scoop.

Why I would want one: The Cobra was a serious muscle car package. It came standard with a 428-4V CJ, competition suspension, 4-speed manual transmission and F70-14 tires. The car also included a blacked out grille, hood lock pins, and "Cobra" emblems. It doesn't get much cooler than that.

Fun fact: The Ford Torino had many movie and television starring roles throughout the years. The 1972 Gran Torino Sport was featured in the 2008 Clint Eastwood film "Gran Torino" and 2009's "Fast And Furious." The 1974–76 body style became popular due to the 1970's Starsky and Hutch television series, and was again revived with the release of the 2004 film version of the detective series.
