AJ's Car of the Day: 1968 Dodge Charger Hemi R/T
Car: Dodge Charger Hemi R/T
What makes it special: The 426 cu in Street Hemi V8 was not available in Non-R/T model Dodge Chargers.
What made it famous: NASCAR banished Race Hemi-powered Dodges (and Plymouths) for Super-Speedway use in 1965, forcing Chrysler to hatch the slightly detuned Street Hemi to the public from 1966 through 1971.
Why I would want one: With 425 hp and 490 lb-ft, any Street Hemi Dodge Charger R/T is a blue-chip performer and extremely collectible.
Fun fact: The 426 Street Hemi V8 added a $604.75 to the Charger R/T's base sticker price of $3,506. Because of that, only 475 Charger R/T buyers went for the extra expense of the Hemi in 1968. (211 with Chrysler's 4-speed stick, and 264 with the Torqueflite automatic.)
