AJ's Car of the Day: 1963 Oldsmobile F85 Jetfire Turbo

Car: Oldsmobile F85 Jetfire Turbo

Year: 1963

What makes it special: It was a "one-year only style" for the 1963 Oldsmobile F85, getting new styling from the previous year's model. The Turbocharged V8 Jetfire returned for what would turned out to be its final year.

What made it famous: It was equipped with a Garrett Turbocharged version of the High Compression 215 V8 rated at 215 bhp, more horsepower than the standard 185 bhp Aluminum Block V8 of the F85 Cutlass model.

Why I would want one: Actually, I had. But mine was a convertible with the standard high Compression 215 Aluminum block V8.

Fun fact:  After some cooling problems and being deemed to be expensive to manufacture, GM ceased production of the all-aluminum engine after 1963 and the 215 V8 was bought by British manufacturer Rover to use in its sedans and Land Rover off-road vehicles. Turbo-boosted engines turned up in a few American car lines into the 1990's, but ironically, none of them were Oldsmobiles.
