AJ's Car of the Day: 1970 Ford Mustang 428 Super Cobra-Jet Convertible

Car: Ford Mustang 428 Super Cobra-Jet Convertible

 Year: 1970

What makes it special: In addition to the obvious restyle the Mustang received for 1970, there is one other distinction about this particular convertible. This is an extremely rare Mustang. According to the 428 Cobra Jet Registry, only 47 428 Cobra Jet convertibles were produced in 1970, and of those, a total of nine Super Cobra Jet convertibles were produced in 1970.

What made it famous: What lurks under it's unassuming hood: a factory 428 cu in 4-barrel Super Cobra Jet V8 engine with a 4-speed close ratio manual transmission and drag pack.

Why I would want one: It's rarity makes it even more attractive, but what really seals the deal is that this is a Mustang collector’s dream come true. Factory raw power on tap, while "getting in the wind." Not much else is needed to say....

Fun fact: The Cobra Jet and the Super Cobra Jet Ram Air were both 428 cubic inch V8’s producing 335 horsepower or 360 horsepower, depending on which model was chosen. A limited edition (499 units produced) Boss 429 was available on select models and produced 375 horsepower. This version also had Ram Air hood scoops.
