Car: Chevrolet Camaro Z28 LT-1
What makes it special: It was the first year for the second generation Camaro. The 1970 redesign was the foundation for the Z28 era, lasting until 1981. Many feel that the 1970 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 was simply the best all-around Z28 ever built.
What made it famous: It's new engine. Trans Am racing now allowed destroking to achieve 305 cid, so the Z28 was equipped with the Corvette's 350 cid LT1 V8 as its sole power-plant. A timeless small block, the LT1 had solid lifters, a hot cam, big valves, aluminum pistons, 11.0:1 compression, and a 780-cfm Holley 4-barrel. It was rated at 360 bhp in the Z28. ( by way of comparison, it was 370 bhp in the Corvette ) A Hurst shifted Muncie 4-speed manual transmission and a Positraction rear with 3.73:1 gears or available 4.10:1 gears completed the package.
Why I would want one: Great body lines plus suspension advances made all 1970 Camaros good handlers, but the Z28's added firmer underpinnings and sticky Polyglas F60xl5 tires made it a great handling road car.
Fun fact: Showroom versions of the Z28 began to lose horsepower after this year, beginning a long performance decline. The 1970 was the peak of the Z28 Camaro's muscle years.
