Car: American Motors Corporation ( AMC ) AMX 2-Door Coupe
What makes it special: It was a unique muscle car produced by the American Motors Corporation starting in 1968. It was also the only American-built, steel-bodied, two-seater of its time since the first Ford Thunderbirds of 1955-'57. The AMX was competition ( to a degree), with America's only OTHER two-seater of the time, the Chevrolet Corvette, but could be bought for substantially fewer dollars.
What made it famous: The AMX offered top-notch performance at an affordable price, and could be fitted with the optional 390 cu in V8, 4-speed manual transmission and "Go Pack." The Go Pack added Special Duty Handling equipment, power assisted front disc brakes, a "Twin Grip" limited slip differential, heavy duty cooling equipment, 14"x6" mag wheels, and racing stripes. The Go Pack was available for AMX's with the large V8's, like the optional 343 cu in or the top-of-the-line 390cu in version, which was rated by the factory at 315hp and 425ft/lbs.
Why I would want one: This falls into the "out-of-the-ordinary" muscle car category. In a sea of highly desired, but "the usual"...it's a breath of fresh air.
Fun fact: In spite of an enthusiastic initial reception by automotive media and enthusiasts, AMX sales never thrived. After three model years, the two-seat version was discontinued, and the AMX's signature badging was then transferred to a high-performance version of its four-seater sibling named Javelin, from 1971-'74.
