Car: Pontiac GTO 2-door Coupe
What makes it special: It was the first year for the Pontiac GTO, which was an option package for the LeMans model. It was available for the two-door Coupe, Hardtop, and Convertible body styles. With every available option, the GTO cost about $ 4,500 and weighed around 3,500 lb.
What made it famous: The GTO package included a 325 hp, 389 cu in V8 with a single Carter AFB 4-barrel carb., dual exhaust, chrome valve covers and air cleaner, a 7-blade clutch fan, Hurst floor-shifted, 3-speed manual transmission, stiffer springs, larger front sway bar, wider wheels with 7.50 × 14 redline tires, dual hood scoops, and GTO badges for just $295. Optional equipment included a 4-speed manual or Super Turbine 300 2-speed automatic, and a more powerful 3 two-barrel Rochester 2G "Tri-Power" carburetor set-up.
Why I would want one: It's the first year, first generation GTO...the car that launched one of the greatest muscle car lines in history. Love the "Spinner-styled" wheel covers.
Fun fact: The GTO was basically a violation of General Motor's policy limiting the A-Body intermediate line to a maximum engine displacement of 330 cu in. Since the GTO was an option package for the Pontiac Tempest and NOT "standard" equipment, it fell into a loophole in the policy.
