Car: Oldsmobile Cutlass 442
What makes it special: The Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 was the result of the competition between General Motors Pontiac and Oldsmobile Divisions. Because of its late introduction about 3/4's of the way through the model year, the Olds offering was a conservative package.
What made it famous: The 1964 442 used the "B-09 Police Apprehender Pursuit" option, with a 4-barrel, 330 cu in V8 with heavy-duty valve gear and a hotter camshaft giving it 310 hp. The package also included a stiffened frame, boxed rear suspension control arms, a heavy duty clutch and 4-speed manual transmission. A heavy duty driveshaft, oversized brakes and a heavy-duty police-suspension package that included heavy duty wheels, higher-rate front and rear coil springs, heavy-duty shocks, a larger front and rear anti-roll bar, Posi-Trac, and a dual snorkel air cleaner.
Why I would want one: It's the ground floor ancestor to the famed Olds 442 line. It's also the best looking of the 442 models ( in my humble opinion...so don't be hatin'..).
Fun fact: In 1964, the "442" name stood for a 4-speed transmission, 4 barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. But in 1965, the 442 could now be had with a 400 cubic inch V8 and automatic transmission, so as a result, the 442 now meant a 400 V8, 4 barrel, and dual exhaust.
