Car: Chevrolet Corvette Split-Window Coupe
What makes it special: Introducing a new name, "Sting Ray", the 1963 model was the first year for a Corvette Coupe and it featured a distinctive tapering rear deck with a split rear window. This feature was for 1963 only.
What made it famous: It's split rear window design was problematic from the get-go. Corvette chief engineer Zora Duntov never liked the split rear window because it blocked rear vision, though other engineers thought it to be a key part of the entire design. The 1963 Corvette Sting Ray also featured hidden headlamps, non-functional hood vents, and an independent rear suspension. Duntov got his way with the split rear window in 1964, and the Corvette Sting Ray changed to a full width window.
Why I would want one: It's the first year for independent rear suspension, it's a one-year only split-window design, it's the first year of the Sting Ray model name, and is wanted by collectors everywhere.
Fun fact: The 1963 Corvette's distinctive tapering rear deck feature design later reappeared on Buick's 1971 "Boattail" Riviera model.
