AJ's Car of the Day :1964 Ford Fairlane 500

Car: Ford Fairlane 500 2-door Hardtop

Year: 1964

What makes it special: It was the first year that the rear "taillight fins" disappeared. The "Swing-Away" steering wheel became an option that year,

What made it famous:  The 260 became the base V8. The "K-code" 271-horsepower 289 V8 continued gaining dual exhausts, while a 195 horsepower version of the 289 with a 2-barrel carburetor and hydraulic lifters was introduced. But most of all, 1964 was the year that the legendary 427 cu in V8 equipped, "Thunderbolt" factory lightweight version of the Ford Fairlane debuted as a one -year-only factory Super Stock race car.

Why I would want one: I currently own and cherish a 1963 Fairlane 2-door  sedan, and I would love to add a '64 to the roster. ( In addition to the 1962 and the 1965 through '70 if I had my way.)

Fun fact: Ford's Fairlane was initially a full-size car, but became a mid-size car starting with the 1962 model year.
