AJ's Car of the Day 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 W30
Car: Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 W30
What makes it special: The Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 received a facelift for 1966. The big news was the addition of two new optional engines: the 360 hp L69, with three 2-barrel Rochester 2GC carburetors on a progressive linkage, and the W30.
What made it famous: The W30 engine equipped 442's added an outside-air induction system via tubing from the front bumper, and a hotter cam. The battery was relocated to the trunk to make room for the air hoses, on the coupe which prevented the package from being available on convertible models. Also, Hurst shifters were now standard equipment with floor-mounted manual transmissions including the optional heavy-duty 3-speed, M-20 wide-ratio 4-speed or M-21 close-ratio 4-speed.
Why I would want one: It was the last of two remaining years for the boxy, but stylish Cutlass body. The addition of a 4-speed manual transmission shifted W30 just makes the fire burn hotter.
Fun fact: Only 54 W30s were built by the factory, although an additional 97 were produced for dealer installation.
