AJ's Car of the Day 1970 Ford LTD Brougham

Car: Ford LTD Brougham

Year: 1970

What makes it special: Introduced as the highest trim of the full-size Ford model range, the Ford LTD introduced options and features normally reserved for luxury brands such as the Lincoln brand. It was the largest vehicle produced by Ford in North America for most of its production. At various times throughout its production, the LTD range included two-door and four-door pillared and hardtop sedans, a two-door convertible, and the Ford LTD Country Squire five-door woodgrain station wagon.

What made it famous: For the 1970 Model year, LTD's split grille was discontinued. Ford redesigned the front end of the LTD with a three-segment grille with a prominent center sectio(a toned down version of the 5th generation Ford Thunderbird. All LTDs got a new Federally-mandated locking steering column and wheel, with the ignition switch located on the right side of the column. The standard engine for the '70 LTD was the 250hp, 2-barrel 351 Cleveland V8. Optional was the 265hp 390, or 320hp 429 V8.

Why I would want one: I have a "thing" for the larger Ford models. They are just awesome comfortable cruisers.

Fun fact: In the 1965-1974 TV show "The FBI.", Ford was the major sponsor of the show, and the Ford LTD was one of the premiere choices for agents to use on the show.
