Staff Sergeant Michael Malarsie On Show Talking About Being Blinded By An IED Attack and Now Running The ING Hartford Half Marathon With His Guide Dog This Weekend!
Retired Air Force Staff Sergeant Michael Malarsie is a recipient of the Bronze Star with Valor, and he’s a client of the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation. Fidelco is Connecticut’s own and New England’s only guide dog school headquartered here in the state since 1960 and we delivered Michael’s Fidelco German Shepherd Guide Dog on his “alive day” one year after he was blinded by an IED attack.
After Staff Sergeant Michael Malarsie was blown off a bridge, his eyes pulverized, face shattered and shrapnel throughout his body, Michael stayed in the fight loading ammo for his fellow soldiers. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor for his heroism on the battlefield that day. Four of his battle buddies were killed in that attack, and when Michael woke up in the hospital and learned he’d never see again, he decided that the best way to honor the memory of his four friends was to never let blindness slow him down. He’s running the Half Marathon as the Team Captain for Team Fidelco, made up of more than 70 runners.
