AJ's Car of the Day: 1959 Ford Rancheros
Car: Ford Ranchero
What makes it special: It was the last year the Ford Ranchero was based on a full sized Ford platform.
What made it famous: It had a longer bed that the '57 and '58 models, giving it more hauling space. It was restyled and given mechanical updates to fight the introduction of Chevrolet's new El Camino competition.
Why I would want one: The final production year for any model gives it more value, plus a 300 hp, 352 cu in V8 became available.
Fun fact: As it turns out, the 352 V8 was rarely ordered by Ranchero buyers. In 1960, the Ranchero name was applied to the new compact Ford Falcon model, and in later years the midsized Fairlane and Torino models. The Ranchero line met its demise at the end of 1979 due to the growing popularity of small, fancy import and domestic trucks.
