AJ's Car of the Day 1972 Shelby Maverick

Car: Shelby Maverick

Year: 1972

What makes it special: It is one of the Late Carroll Shelby's lesser known accomplishments. In a joint effort with Mexican Shelby parts businessman Eduardo Velasquez and Ford of Mexico, Carroll Shelby produced 300 Ford Mavericks that were given the Shelby treatment, under the "Shelby De Mexico" program.

What made it famous: Each of these Shelby Mavericks were powered by a 302 V8 with special Shelby Aluminum engine parts, Shelby emblems and Shelby aftermarket rims,  a 429-style hood scoop, rear-window louvers, a front chin and rear deck spoiler, hood-mounted tachometer, Mercury Cougar-style rear taillights, dual color-matching side sport mirrors,  and side decal treatment.

Why I would want one: ( More along the lines of "If I can FIND one." ) These are so rare that most you will find are tribute models. ( I even had a hard time finding a PHOTO of the original.) As both a Ford Maverick and Carroll Shelby fan, I believe that having an original would truly make anyone's collection.

Fun fact: No "Shelby De Mexico" cars were ever brought into the United States until 1986.
