Location: Cinestudio (2012) Directed by David France. Screenplay by David France, T. Woody Richman and Tyler H. Walk. With: Larry Kramer, Robert Rafsky, Ann Northrup, Peter Staley, Spencer Cox. As we go to press it’s too early to know if How to Survive a Plague wins the Oscar for Best Documentary, but it’s not too soon to experience one of best movies of any genre made in 2012. The time is the 1980s, the place Ed Koch’s New York City, and the plague is the AIDS epidemic that devastated a generation of gay men, among others. While scorchingly angry, the movie’s positive charge comes from the small group (Act Up) who try everything under the sun to bring about change. “If I have one piece of advice for young, aspiring activists, it is to always hold on to the joy, always make it fun.” - Spencer Cox, a former Act Up member in the film who died in December.
