AJ's Car of the Day: 1969 Plymouth Road Runner 440 Six Pack Hardtop

Car: Plymouth Road Runner 440 Six-Pack Hardtop

Year: 1969

What makes it special: It was Plymouth's offering of a bare-bones, affordable hot rod on a budget. It was a  lightweight and cheap B-body pillared coupe, stripped down to rubber taxicab floor mats and a bench seat and adding Police-service suspension and brakes.

What made it famous: For 1969, a 390 hp, triple-2 barrel 440 V8 was added to the Road  Runner's engine choices that performed like the Hemi at half the cost. Known as the 440-6 BBL, it came with plain black wheels sans hubcaps and a flat black fiberglass hood with a large fresh-air scoop.

Why I would want one: The 1969 Plymouth Road Runner 440 Six-Pack Hardtop is still listed to this day as one of the ten most desired Mopars of all time. I'll take mine with a 4-speed manual transmission (although a 727 Torqueflite automatic was also available).

Fun fact: To market the new machine, Plymouth licensed the Warner Brothers’ popular Road Runner character, and equipped it with black-and-white Road Runner decals and an actual “beep-beep” horn that when activated, sounded exactly like the cartoon character's beep-beep.
