AJ's Car of the Day: 1968 1/2 Ford Mustang GT R Code 428 CJ Fastback

Car: Ford Mustang GT R Code 428 CJ Fastback

Year: 1968 1/2

What makes it special: It was Ford's secret weapon in 1968: a 335hp, 428 Cobra Jet big-block V8 that made its debut in the Ford Mustang at Pomona Raceway. The first 50 that were built were special lightweight drag strip specials, and given to top drivers.

What made it famous: The 1968 1/2 "R" Code Cobra Jet Mustang was built by Ford to stop the "Hemi" dominance at the race track. They sported a one-year-only "Top Loader" 4-speed factory shifter, and staggered rear shocks that only came with the 4-speed model.

Why I would want one: 1968 1/2 "R" 428 Cobra Jet Factory 4-speed GT Fastbacks have been considered a very rare find for decades, making them a highly sought collectible.

Fun fact: Development of the Cobra Jet didn't really get underway until December of that year due to a United Auto Workers strike that shut down Ford during the fall of 1967. The 428 Cobra Jet equipped Mustang has been called "The Fastest Pure Stock in the history of man."
