AJ's Car of the Day: 1999 Shelby Series 1 Roadster

Car: Shelby Series 1 Roadster

Year: 1999

What makes it special: It was the only car ever designed and engineered by the late Carroll Shelby from a clean sheet of paper, and built from the ground up. All of Shelby's other creations were re-engineered models produced by other manufacturers and modified by Shelby.

What made it famous: Unlike other Shelby creations, the Series 1 Roadster was powered by a 320 hp, 4.0 liter Oldsmobile L47 Aurora DOHC V8 engine.

Why I would want one: They're kind of rare, as only 249 were produced for their introductory year.

Fun fact : The Shelby Series 1 Roadster will do 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, and a quarter mile time of 12.8 seconds at 112 mph. Top speed is 170 mph, which is actually 15 mph faster than the 427 Shelby Cobra.
