AJ's Car of the Day: Thursday, July 5th

1970 Baldwin Chevrolet / Motion Phase III  Camaro

(Baldwin Chevrolet/Motion Supercars...Super Muscle Cars built in Long Island, NY... my chest is filled with pride on this one)

Baldwin Chevrolet was located on the corner of Merrick Road and Central Avenue in Baldwin New York. Not far from them was a high performance speed shop called Motion Performance. Motion Performance was owned and operated by Joel Rosen who built and raced cars on the Drag Strip with some NHRA records under his belt. The teaming up of Motion Performance with Baldwin Chevrolet produced some of the wildest musclecars that would ever hit the streets.

The Baldwin Chevrolet/ Motion Performance combine was one of a number of Chevy dealers that made special performance-oriented versions of the Camaro outside of the normal Chevrolet factory options. These cars were billed as "supercars", basically turnkey race prepared cars, invoiced as new and complete with warranty.

The way it worked was a car was ordered through either Baldwin Chevrolet or Motion Performance. The car was delivered through Baldwin Chevrolet. Then it was dropped off around the corner at Motion Performance where the modifications the customer desired were installed.

The customer would be asked what elapsed time he would like the car to turn in the quarter mile dragstrip. It was then that the customer would be given a price on the car with a guarantee for the elapsed time, or their money would be returned. If the customer could not turn the times promised in the quarter mile; Motion would send their experienced driver out to verify it. No refunds were ever necessary as the cars always performed as promised.

A High Performance 454 Engine, 4 speed, posi rear, heavy-duty suspension, power front disc brakes, bucket seats, HD radiator, special white letter tires, chrome valve covers, chrome air cleaner, 7500 RPM Ignition and full Dyno-Tune. all came as standard equipment...as for the Phase III 454 Camaro, it was all the equipment that is listed above, plus heavy duty Superbite traction bars and shocks, a special 850 CFM "double pumper" carburetor, a "Phase III " Fiberglass Hood, high capacity fuel pump, Phase III ignition, special exhaust Headers, a SEMA approved Clutch, Flywheel and Scattershield, along with special  emblems on the car....and all for a price of just $5,995 bucks ! Super car....Super Power...Super sweet!
