2008: This was the first Cheap Trick Day in the State of Illinois. It was declared in June the previous year that April 1st of every year would be Cheap Trick Day. 

2003: Pearl Jam kicked off their first North American tour in three years in Denver. During the concert, singer Eddie Vedder impaled a mask of George W. Bush on a microphone stand during the song “Bu$hleaguer” which caused some fans to walk out.

2002: Paul McCartney kicked off his first tour in nine years at the Oakland Arena in Oakland, CA in support of his album Driving Rain.

1992: Billy Idol received a $2,000 fine after pleading no contest to hitting a woman in the face after leaving a restaurant in California the previous October. Idol was also ordered to make public service announcements against drug & alcohol abuse.

1985: David Lee Roth left Van Halen to begin a solo career. Roth later re-joined Van Halen briefly in 1996 & 2000 before re-joining permanently in 2006.

1978: Eric Clapton peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Lay Down Sally” which was Clapton’s second top ten single as a solo artist in the U.S.

1978: The Philadelphia Fury, the soccer team co-owned by Mick Jagger, Peter Frampton, Paul Simon & Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman played their first game against the Washington Diplomats at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia. The Fury lost 3-0.

1974: Tom Petty left Gainesville, FL & headed to Los Angeles with a demo tape of then-band Mudcrutch, which soon found interest from seven record labels & later signed with British record producer Denny Cordell’s label Shelter Records.

1972: The three day Mar y Sol Festival kicked off in Manati, Puerto Rico. Performers on the festival included Emerson, Lake & Palmer, The Allman Brothers Band, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, The J. Geils Band & a then-unknown Billy Joel.
