1958 Plymouth Fury Hardtop

How’d that movie description go again?  Something like, “…she was BORN bad!” Haha...

Production of Plymouth Fury’s ran from 1956 to 1978.  A premium-priced model when introduced to the buying public, they were intended to showcase the line in order to draw consumers into showrooms.  (The word "Fury" of course, being a type of anger  inspired by the “Furies", mythological Ancient Greek and Roman mythology creatures.)

They were sold only as an off-white, 2-door  Hardtop Coupe with Gold Anodized Aluminum trim in 1956, ‘57, and ‘58.  The Plymouth Fury had a special interior, bumper wing guards and it’s V8 engine sported  twin 4 barrel carbs.  The 1957 and 1958 318 V8’s produced 290 hp.  In 1958, the optional engine was a 350 cu in V8 called “Golden Commando” with 2 x 4 barrel carbs producing 305 hp.  A rare 315 hp option with fuel injection was available, but the electronic Bendix fuel-injection system was recalled by the factory, resulting in owners getting  a conventional dual four-barrel setup in it’s place.  The Golden Commando engine was optional on any Plymouth Plaza, Savoy, Belvedere, Suburban and Fury models, as was the dual four barrel 318 V8 (dubbed the V-800 Dual Fury.)  Four and Two barrel 318 V8’s also arrived for 1958,  and were simply called V-800.

Of course, most  recall the red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury the title character in Stephen King's novel “Christine” and  it’s  film adaptation as a possessed, sentient being.  Dialogue like, “Her names Christine.  Christine….I like that!” got the tragic ball rolling for poor Arnie…the unfortunate tragic movie character who lovingly restores the derelict car to her former beauty, but himself winds up a victim when the car goes on a murderous, vengeful rampage, wiping out all that dare to try to harm her OR Arnie.  Of course, he gets killed by her accidentally...which does NOT help the situation for his best friend and movie hero.  (Ya know, I think I’m going to watch that one this weekend.  It’s been awhile…)  All I can say in Arnie’s defense is… hey, she really WAS a beauty. Just try not to tick her off….us married men can relate…haha!
