1963 Ford Galaxie 500 Factory 427 -T R Code / 425 hp 4-Speed

Today in the "AJ C.O.T.D." , I have something a little different. Keeping in mind that I primarily like to feature muscle cars, classics, cool trucks, seldom seens and the like...looking at this photo, you must think that there's a mistake. It's a plain old 1963 Ford Galaxie 500 4-door sedan. It looks like Grandpa's car...some large , grocery getter that he's had since brand new. Low mileage, it probably hasn't  been over 60 mph in decades...and the left turn signal must always be switched into the "on" position. There's probably a tissue box and a "RETIRED" hat sitting on the rear window deck...Right?

Wrong.

One of the rarest Ford muscle cars of all time, this Factory 427-T R Code, 4 speed, Police Car is one of just four ever built. Specially ordered when new by the Police Chief of Austin, Texas as his personal car, it is equipped with the ultra rare 427-T/ 425HP center-oiler R Code motor. (The "T" is for "Transistorized Ignition") While you may have seen a few R Code cars before, how many 427-T engines have you seen?

As with most Police cars, this one was built tough. Huge brakes, HD Kelsey Hayes wheels, 3.50:1 9" rear end, dual exhaust, HD cooling system, factory Certified speedometer, and the like. But being a Galaxie 500, and built for the Chief, this car also features a cloth interior, full floor carpeting, and lot's of chrome. The original rubber floor mats are still in place, and the added passenger's grab handle as well. Not content with a plain Jane car, the Chief also ordered the AM radio with rear seat speaker and reverb, tinted glass, police radio, a full complement of Stewart-Warner gauges in a special panel under the dash including yet another certified speedometer, and full hubcaps! Since the factory wouldn't put A/C on a 427, the Chief had it installed at the dealership. This is one fancy cop car. Take me in at once, officer!

Yep. And I'll be willing to bet that many a criminal sought to run from this car, thinking that what they were sitting in was going to outrun this seemingly tame Ford. Those same persons probably sat in a cell with the most baffled looks on their embarrassed faces for quite some time. This is without a doubt one of the most awesome sleepers of all time. Score one for the good guys...love it!
