TOP 10 LIST:
A shark possibly 14 feet long killed a swimmer near a popular New Zealand beach on Wednesday, then disappeared after police attempting to save the man fired gunshots at the enormous predator. Muriwai Beach near Auckland was closed after the fatal attack. A man who was fishing at the beach said he saw the swimmer struggle against the “huge” shark. He told the man to swim to the rocks, but it was too late. The swimmer, was about 650 feet offshore when the shark attacked. Police went out in inflatable surf-lifesaving boats and shot at the shark, which they estimate was 12 to 14 feet long. It rolled over and disappeared police aren't certain that they killed the creature.
TOP 10: WAYS TO AVOID A SHARK ATTACK
1) This should be common sense, but if you see a shark in the water, leave the area immediately.
2) Avoid areas with lots of fish or seals, chances are that sharks could be around and could confuse you with dinner.
3) Avoid looking like a seal. Reclining on a surfboard and wearing a wetsuit and fins can give you a seal's silhouette from a shark's perspective below.
4) Swim in a group, or at least be sure to have a partner with you. Stay alert as to what is going on in the surrounding water environment.
5) Avoid brightly colored swimwear, colorful surfboards and shiny jewelry mimic natural fish bling, so save your flashy gear for terrestrial pursuits.
6) Try to swim on sunny, clear days. Foggy mornings and dusk may cause a shark to confuse you with prey.
7) Sharks are creatures of habit. Do not swim in areas where a shark attack has recently occurred, since the same shark, or others, may still frequent the spot.
8) If you have a bleeding cut, an exposed wound or are a menstruating woman, do not swim in open water. Blood and human waste attract sharks.
9) Don't swim too far from shore. It takes you away from assistance that could save you should an attack occur.
10) Splashing and other erratic movements signal distress and can alert sharks to your presence. Try to keep strokes and kicks smooth and even.
