This Day in Music History...

1964: The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" enters the Cashbox singles chart. It will crack the rival Billboard chart a week later, on its way to becoming their first US #1.

1992: Paul Simon kicks off a South African tour, becoming the first major artist to tour the country following the end of a cultural boycott.

1992: Nirvana's Nevermind replaces Michael Jackson's Dangerous at #1 on the Billboard chart.

1999: Eric Clapton, Aerosmith and Celine Dion are winners in the Rock/Pop categories at the 26th Annual American Music Awards. Billy Joel receives the annual Special Award of Merit. Blondie make their first TV appearance in 16 years on the show.

2000: Sharon Osbourne quits as manager of The Smashing Pumpkins, issuing this classic resignation statement: "It was with great pride and enthusiasum that I took on management of the Pumpkins back in October, but unfortunately I must resign today due to medical reasons - Billy Corgan was making me sick!"
