This Day in Music History...

1965: The Who's first single, "I Can't Explain," is released in the UK.

1967: The Rolling Stones perform "Let's Spend the Night Together" on The Ed Sullivan Show. Mick Jagger was asked to tone down the song's lyrics to "let's spend some time together," but on the air, he mumbles the controversial line to the bewilderment of all concerned. Petula Clark is also on that night. The Sullivan staff has no problem with her "Colour My World."

1976: Joe Walsh makes his Eagles debut at the kick-off show of a tour of Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

1977: The Eagles' Hotel California tops the US album chart for the first time. It will spend a total of eight weeks at #1, though not consecutively.

1982: The Police kick off the first leg of their Ghost in America US arena tour at Boston Garden. The Go-Go's are their opening act.

1992: Jimi Hendrix, The Yardbirds, Bobby "Blue" Band, Booker T. & the M-G's, Johnny Cash, Bill Graham, The Isley Brothers and Sam & Dave are all inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

1993: Neil Young performs "Harvest Moon" and "Unknown Legend" on The Tonight Show.

2002: George Harrison's first post-Beatles singles, 1970's "My Sweet Lord," is re-released.

2005: NBC stages a star-studded tsunami fundraising concert, Tsunami Aid: A Concert of Hope. It features performances by Roger Waters with Eric Clapton ("Wish You Were Here"), Brian Wilson, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz and many, many other. It raises $18 million.

2008: Ringo Starr releases Liverpool 8, his first studio album for Capitol since 1974's Goodnight Vienna.
