The 2020 Closer to Free Ride presented by Bank of America will take place as a redesigned event and experience that allows you to ride and fundraise from wherever you choose to be. While public health concerns and local regulations will prevent us from gathering together in person on September 12th, we will still unite from wherever we are to deliver the hope, love and support that Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center so desperately need.
There will be no fundraising minimums, but the need for funding is even greater now, so we’ll have suggested fundraising minimums and rewards to keep you challenged and inspired. As always, 100% of the funds we raise will go to the unparalleled research and care at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center.
Ride Day will still take place on September 12, 2020 but instead of coming together in person, we’ll gather online for an online opening ceremony before each heading out to ride our desired distances (while following proper social distancing guidelines). Virtual experiences will be live and available throughout the day. These experiences include our Smilow Salute and interactive tribute and social media walls plus a few more surprises. Though we’ll be apart, it is our goal to enable our community to connect as one on Ride Day.
Thanks to the generous support of you and the event sponsors, one hundred percent of the funds raised by Closer to Free riders and volunteers directly supports research and patient care at Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital. Over the past nine years, the Closer to Free Ride funds have benefited programs and initiatives including: Specialty Programs, Survivorship Programs, Cancer Genetics & Prevention Program and Phase I Clinical Trials.
