99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1992!

That year PLR welcomed Weird Al Yankovic to Toad’s Place. Weird Al hit the road in 1992 to support his seventh studio album, “Off The Deep End,” which featured such singles as Smells Like Nirvana and You Don’t Love Me Anymore.

Weird Al was no stranger to New Haven. Back in the 80s and 90s he we would regularly perform at Toad’s and pack the house. He’d also be a regular at our radio station studio before each of his shows!

PODCAST – Monday, June 14: Can A Green Beret Help AJ Break Free Of Zip Ties? And What’s Happening With Cryptocurrencies?

John the Green Beret has amassed some viral fame on TikTok, for showing people how to escape from abduction when you’ve been tied up with tape or zip ties. AJ was asked to give it a shot, and things started a little rocky for him. With AJ still tied at his wrists and ankles, Chaz urged him to keep trying to break free. During that time, Amanda from Largay Travel was on to talk about the Chaz and AJ Punta Cana Party, which is completely sold out. (0:00)

Dumb Ass News – Nearly an hour after first being tied up, AJ was still struggling to escape. Elfie the intern felt like he knew how to bust out, and finally Phil the Producer came in and got it done on the first attempt. (22:04)

Should you buy Bitcoin? Chaz and AJ have seen the price of cryptocurrencies take a tumble lately, so to understand what’s going on, they called Kyle the teacher. Kyle explained why this happens, and answered with some cryptocurrency that is worth investing in, now. (30:35)

Dumb Ass News – If you’re going to chant something at a sporting event, shouldn’t everyone be able to understand what you’re saying? A viral clip has confused the internet, since the chant seems to have multiple interpretations. (45:08)

50 Years, 50 Albums 1981: Rush ‘Moving Pictures’

50 Years, 50 Albums 1981: Rush ‘Moving Pictures’

It certainly comes with no surprise that Rush’s Moving Pictures album came in with the most votes this week as we focused on the year 1981. Foreigner 4 and Tattoo You from the Stones are both great albums from that year, but couldn’t keep up with our rabid Rush fans! Moving Pictures is the eighth studio album from Rush following up Permanent Waves the previous year as the band started to become a little more radio friendly. Moving Pictures remains their highest selling record in the United States selling over five million copies and introduced us to “Tom Sawyer” one of their best-known songs that has been played at every concert tour since its release. At this time, we are proud to induct Rush’s Moving Pictures into the WPLR Hall of fame. Thanks for your votes.
