99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1973!

That year PLR welcomed Johnny Winter to Waterbury’s Palace Theater. Johnny hit the road in 1973 to support his fifth studio album, “Still Alive and Well,” which was produced by Rick Derringer and featured the title track Still Alive and Well and two Rolling Stones songs: Silver Train and Let It Bleed.

50 Years, 50 Albums 1973: Pink Floyd ‘Dark Side of the Moon’

Dark Side of the Moon is Pink Floyd’s eighth studio album. A brilliantly composed concept record that is certainly worthy of being called the greatest of all time. After the Meddle tour, Roger Waters came up with this concept album that dealt with things that make people mad, mental illness and an illusion to lunacy (Progressive Rock at its finest). Dark Side spent 736 consecutive weeks on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart from 1973 to 1988. The album would come back on and off the charts for the next 33 years giving this album a total of 957 weeks on Billboard’s Top Album chart making Dark Side the best-selling album of all time. This album is to be listened to on headphones from “Speak To Me” seamlessly running into “Breathe”, “On the Run”, “Time” to the brilliantly voiced “Great Gig in the sky” a vocal arrangement by Clare Torry a British singer doing the wordless vocals to wrap up side one. This is when somebody must get off the couch to flip the album over. Side two begins with “Money” nonstop through “Us and Them”, “Any Colour You Like”, “Brain Damage”, and “Eclipse” wraps up this musical journey and what a ride! We are proud to welcome Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon to the WPLR Hall of Fame.

A local TV sports reporter recorded a family of bears wandering around his yard. Chaz and AJ played the audio from Joe Zone’s post, where a bunch of hungry bears tried to knock down his bird feeders. (0:00)

Carlos was on the phone with Chaz and AJ, to share his unique perspective from the truck crash on 84 earlier this week. Carlos and his partner, Brian were directly behind the truck before it flipped, and helped to get the driver out of the wreck before it lit on fire. (10:08)

Dumb Ass News – AJ explains how he already got his first shot of the vaccine, minutes after telling everyone he was “on the list.” (19:34)

The Motley Crue Stadium Tour with Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett will be moving ahead as planned. Chaz and AJ asked Jimmy Koplik what that decision means for other concerts, about the lineup announcement of Bonnaroo, and the first time he met Billy Joel. (27:07)

Mark Rusin is a retired Las Vegas police officer, and was there during the Chicago mob regime that inspired the movie “Casino.” (44:05)

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1973!

That year PLR welcomed Pink Floyd to Waterbury’s Palace Theater. Pink Floyd hit the road in 1973 to support its eighth studio album, “Dark Side of the Moon,” which featured such super hits like Money, Us and Them and Time. Pink Floyd had released “Dark Side of the Moon” less than three before its show in Waterbury and played the album in its entirety at The Palace.

Movie critic Joe Meyers was on to talk about the big movie release today, Godzilla vs. Kong. Joe woke up early to watch it, and tell Chaz and AJ why he thinks it is a movie for children. Chaz said he’s not interested, AJ wants there to be a training montage for each monster like in “Rocky,” and Ashley could not care less about an animated character on screen (outside of her Disney favorites, of course) (32:41)

Throwback Concert: The Allman Brothers Band at New Haven Coliseum 1973

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1973!

That year PLR welcomed The Allman Brothers Band at New Haven Coliseum. The Allman Brothers had released its third studio album “Eat a Peach” in 1972 and it featured such songs as Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More, Melissa and One Way Out. The band was coming off the tragic death of group leader and founder Duane Allman, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in October 1971. The Allman Brothers did not replace Duane and toured as five-piece band when they returned to the road in 1972 and 1973.

Unfortunately, tragedy struck again in November 1972 when another founding member, Berry Oakley, was also killed in a motorcycle accident.
