Throwback Concert: The Rolling Stones at Toad’s Place 1989
99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1989!
That year we saw the biggest rock band in the world play a surprise warm-up show at Toad’s Place. It was eight years since the Rolling Stones last played a live show in the United States, so before they embarked on their massive Steel Wheels World Tour, they shook off the rust and performed an 11-song set at New Haven’s legendary night club.
This show was a secret. Even the co-owners of Toad’s, Brian Phelps and the late Mike Spoerndle, didn’t even know about the Stones coming until the day before. Originally billed as the “Saturday Night Dance Party,” it was also promoted as a party for Jimmy Koplik’s birthday.
Only a few hundred people were inside Toad’s Place when the Stones hit the tiny stage at Toad’s, but the way people talk about the show today, you’d think a few thousand were there! Once word started to leak that the Stones were at Toad’s, the club’s bouncers locked the doors and duct tape the pay phones. Among the lucky ones in the crowd were PLR’s Mike Lapitino, The Wigmaster, Marcia Simon and the late, great Sam T. Mike got to hang out backstage after the show and he watched in awe as the band left the stage and headed back to their dressing room.

That year we rocked out to Bon Jovi as they brought their New Jersey Syndicate Tour to Hartford’s XL Center (formerly the Hartford Civic Center). In 1989 Bon Jovi hit the road in support of its fourth studio album, “New Jersey,” which featured hits Lay Your Hands on Me, Bad Medicine and I’ll Be There for You. Joining them on the tour were fellow New Jersey rockers Skid Row.

Dumb Ass News – Chaz and AJ revisited a comment AJ made during Nick’s call, and a selfie-taker in Hoboken fell into icy waters and needed rescuing. (40:00)
Boston comedian Will Noonan’s phone was on fire during the Super Bowl, since he appeared in a commercial that aired in the Boston area! Plus, the big money he won on a long-shot bet. (46:03)

Throwback Concert: Aerosmith at New Haven Coliseum 1989
99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1989!
That year PLR welcomed Aerosmith back to New Haven Coliseum. After a highly successful Permanent Vacation Tour in 1987, Aerosmith hit the road in ’89 to support its tenth studio album “Pump,” which featured hits like Love In An Elevator and Janie’s Got a Gun. The tour lasted almost a full year and there were multiple opening acts along the way, including Metallica, Joan Jett, Poison, The Black Crowes and The Cult. By the time the tour came to New Haven, Skid Row was tabbed as the opener.

99.1 PLR celebrates 50 years! This week we are celebrating another great year in our history: 1989!
That year Metallica came to Connecticut twice on their ‘Damaged Justice’ Tour: The XL Center in March and Lake Compounce in July. They hit the road to support their fourth studio album, “…And Justice for All,” which was first album with bassist Jason Newsted. The tour started in September 1989 and made its way to Hartford in the spring during the first leg of their North American Tour.
