AJ’s Car of the Day: 1958 Edsel Pacer Convertible

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1958 Edsel Pacer Convertible

Car: Edsel Pacer Convertible

Year: 1958

What makes it special: The Pacer model was produced by Edsel and was based on the shorter, more narrow Edsel platform which was also used by Ford and the Ranger. It is one of two Edsel model names reused by other manufacturers, Corsair being the other, which was used for the Henry J by the Kaiser-Frazer corporation.

What made it famous: The Edsel was famous for it’s horseshoe shaped grille and the Pacer model was a step up from the basic Ranger model, with contoured seats, extra-stainless steel exterior and interior trim pieces and nylon cloth upholstery. It was powered by a standard 303hp, 361 cu in 4-barrel FE V8. A 3-speed manual transmission was also standard but could be upgraded to a 3-speed automatic with either a standard column-mounted gear selector or the Teletouch automatic where the drive-selection buttons were located in the center of the steering wheel.

Why I would want one: As bad a rap and the butt of jokes as it may have received, I find the Edsel to be a good looking car, and a change of pace style-wise.

Fun fact: The Teletouch automatic proved to be problematic, and was dropped.

AJ’s “Badass Friday” Car of the Day: 1970 Plymouth “Superbird”

AJ’s “Badass Friday” Car of the Day: 1970 Plymouth “Superbird”

Car:
Year: 1970
What makes it special: Plymouth’s Superbird was a highly modified version of the Road Runner model with well-known graphics and horn. It was the factory’s follow up stock car racing design for the 1970 season to the Dodge Charger Daytona of 1969, and incorporated many engineering changes and modifications from the Daytona’s season in competition on the track. “Superbird” decals were placed on the outside edges of the spoiler vertical struts featuring a picture of the Road Runner cartoon character holding a racing helmet. A smaller version of the decal appears on the driver side headlight door.
What made it famous: Both the Superbird and Daytona were known for featuring a protruding, aerodynamic nosecone, and a high-mounted rear wing. NASCAR’s homologation requirement demanded that vehicles to be raced must be available to the general public and sold through dealerships in specific minimum numbers. Superbird’s had three engine options consisting of a 426 Hemi V8 producing 425 hp, the 440 Super Commando Six Barrel with three 2-barrel carburetors producing 390 hp or the 375 hp 440 Super Commando with a single 4-barrel carburetor. As the 440 was less expensive to produce, the “Street” version of the 426 Hemi engine used in competition was homologated by producing the minimum number required. Only 135 models were fitted with the 426 Hemi.
Why I would want one: Any kid growing up in that time period wanted either a Superbird or Daytona. I am one of those kids.
Fun fact: Due to increasing emissions regulations, combined with insurance hikes for high performance cars and NASCAR’s effective ban on the aero cars, 1970 was the only production year.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1970 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 W-30 Convertible

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1970 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 W-30 Convertible

Car: Oldsmobile 4-4-2 W-30 Convertible

Year: 1970

What makes it special: The 1970 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 W-30 stands as a muscle car classic, but the formula was years in the making. W-30 versions, benefitting from better-breathing heads and what amounted to factory blueprinting, matched the performance of the short-stroke ’66-67 4-4-2 V-8’s. But it wasn’t until ’70 that Olds got it together with perhaps the best all-around 4-4-2 ever. The major advance was the newly standard 455 cid V8, an under-stressed, big-port V8 with tug-boat torque. Yet, it also had an advanced design that kept its exterior dimensions compact and its weight below that of the ’69 400 cid V8. It made 365 bhp in base form and was underrated at 370 in W-30 guise.

What made it famous: The W-30 package again included what Olds called “Select Fit” engine parts, plus a performance calibrated 4-barrel, a hotter cam, and low-restriction exhausts. A Hurst-managed 4-speed with 3.42:1 gears or a performance-calibrated TurboHydra-matic 400 with a Hurst Dual-Gate shifter and 3.23:1 cogs were drivetrain choices. The Anti-Spin axle was standard and dealer-installed ratios up to 5.00:1 were available. Front disc brakes, with no power assist on four-speed cars, sway bars front and rear, and G70xl4 white-letter tires were other W-30 components. Weight reduction was illustrated in the W-30 package. The hood, with molded-in functional scoops, was made of fiberglass and was 18 pounds lighter than the steel version. The W-30’s intake manifold was aluminum, its inner fender liners were plastic, and the cars had less sound deadener than other 4-4-2’s. Aluminum was even used for the differential carrier and cover, shaving another 18 pounds.

Why I would want one: As stated before, the 1970 W-30 was the best 4-4-2 ever made.

Fun fact: A 1970 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 was featured in the chase scene of the movie Demolition Man starring Sylvester Stallone.
