AJ’s Car of the Day: 1959 Buick Invicta 2-door Hardtop

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1959 Buick Invicta 2-door Hardtop

Car: Buick Invicta 2-dr Hardtop

Year: 1959

What makes it special: Buick’s Invicta was produced for the 1959 to 1963 model years. It was a continuation of Buick’s Century concept that mated the standard-sized LeSabre body with the larger 401 cu in “Nailhead” engine, creating the first “Banker’s Hot Rod.”

What made it famous: The Invicta series was a full line of body styles for the 1959 model year, but sales never reached that of the entry-level LaSabre or the top-of-the-line Electra models. It did stay consistent with the sales of the sporty mid-priced models.

Why I would want one: I love the “menacing scowl” of the front, and it’s a very stylish car. The use of chrome is enough without being “over-the-top.”

Fun fact: The Invicta name was taken from latin meaning unconquerable, invincible, unbeatable, unvanquished according to Buick.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1955 Ford Fairlane Country Squire Station Wagon

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1955 Ford Fairlane Country Squire Station Wagon

Car: Ford Fairlane Country Squire Station Wagon

Year: 1955

What makes it special: Ford’s Country Squire station wagon was the top-of-the-line model, known for its external woodgrain trim. They were produced for model years 1950 to 1991. After the demise of the Edsel, the Mercury division picked up the Colony Park and the sister to Ford’s Country Squire, sharing both its bodywork and trim. As part of the full-size Ford model range, the Country Squire was part of several model lines.

What made it famous: For the 1955 model year, the 3rd generation Country Squire was introduced. Ford consolidated it’s three station wagons into a distinct model line and separate from its sedan models. Lasting through 1968. the Counrty Squire was Ford’s flagship wagon, with the four-door non wood-trimmed Country Sedan and the two-door Ranch Wagon. Power choices for the Country Squire ran from the 223 cu I “Mileage Maker” inline-6, to the 312 cu in, Thunderbird “Interceptor” V8, mated  to a range of a 3-speed or 4-speed manual or 3-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission.

Why I would want one: I absolutely adore the style of this wagon. It’s also some of the last days of real wood trim as opposed to the simulated trim and wood-look decals that would adorn the model in later years.

Fun fact: The Country Squire was discontinued as part of the development of the Ford Crown Victoria in 1992.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1951 Fiat Stanga Barchetta

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1951 Fiat Stanga Barchetta

Car: ( ** Car shown at Dragone’s Classic Motorcars in Orange, Ct. )

Year: 1951

What makes it special: In 1949, two brothers, Gianfranco and Sandro Stanga formed a company who’s mission was creating competition cars from parts found throughout Europe. One example started with a chassis from Fiat, powerplant from Gianini and bodywork by Motto. Only seven such examples were produced for racing. The Stanga brothers bought a Fiat 500 chassis then modified it with lightweight tubular steel, and it’s suspension and steering components were also given an upgrade to racing specs.

What made it famous: The Fiat engine was sourced from two other brothers, Attilio and Domica Giannini, bored out to 600 cc and given twin Weber carburetors along with a high-compression head. It was then mated to a 4-speed, close-ratio manual transmission. Motto of Turin, Italy who were known for lightweight racing car bodies fabricated the car’s elegant and sporty body, using a clean design with simple lines and void of any unnecessary trim.

Why I would want one: It’s pure early sports car built for competition. The kind of car you take on a road coarse and unleash it’s capabilities.

Fun fact: Of the seven Stanga Barchetta’s produced, only two were given bodies from Motto. It’s believed that all seven raced in the Mille Miglia in the early 1950’s
