AJ’s Car of the Day: Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible

AJ’s Car of the Day: Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible

Car: Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible

Year: 1960

What makes it special: The fourth-generation Oldsmobile’s were given a complete restyle by the 1959 model year. They were now longer, lower and even wider on their G-Body chassis. While other GM styles featured bigger and sharper rear fins, Oldsmobile gave the Super 88 horizontally flattened rear fins and less chrome, giving the car a cleaner look.

What made it famous: For the 1960 model year, the Super 88 received a bolder front grille and a restyled rear design with new taillights. A restyled instrument panel and a trimmer transmission tunnel gave the car more interior space. Power for the Super 88 came from it’s larger, 315 hp 394 cu in Rocket V8 with 4-barrel carburetor which was standard for the Super 88 models.

Why I would want one: These are land yachts, with smooth rides. If you want a true 1960’s cruiser, this is the car for you.

Fun fact: With its large, high-performance V8, Oldsmobile’ 88 series are considered by many to be the first muscle car, which many claim to be, and as always disputed.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1959 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1959 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible

Car: Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible ( ** Car shown at Dragone Classic Motorcars in Orange, CT. )

Year: 1959

What makes it special: Introduced late in the 1958 model year, the 1959 Ford Galaxie 500 was added as the top trim level above the Ford Fairlane 500 and offered with the same sedan and hardtop styles as the Fairlane. The Sunliner and Skyliner models were also moved from the Fairlane. The 1959 Galaxie models wore both the Galaxie and Fairlane 500 badging.

What made it famous: The 1959 Galaxie featured a stronger, wider railed frame giving the car more interior room, a new front stabilizer bar and variable-rate rear springs giving it a softer ride. A lighter 2-speed Ford-O-Matic transmission was mated to a 200 bhp, 292 cu in overhead-valve, a 225 bhp, 332 cu in or a 300 bhp 352 cu in V8. Another styling cue indicative of the era was that the Galaxie was decked with lots of stainless panels and loads of chrome, and a two-toned paint scheme was optional.

Why I would want one: This particular year of Galaxie was known as the “Galaxie with the Thunderbird look.”

Fun fact: The Galaxie name was used for Ford’s top-trimmed models from 1958 to 1961.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1988 Dodge Aries K Wagon

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1988 Dodge Aries K Wagon

Car: Dodge Aries K Wagon

Year: 1988

What makes it special: Laugh all you like, but the car we all joked about actually saved the Chrysler Corporation’s ass. By the late 70’s, Chrysler was on the rocks as the oil crisis and outdated car designs sent them there. There was a need for an efficient, modern front-wheel-drive car, so Chrysler Head Honcho Lee Iacocca himself masterminded the creation of the all-new “K-Platform” that hit showrooms in 1981. The “K” car came in the form of the Dodge Aries and the Plymouth Reliant models. This K car went on all the way through 1995.

What made it famous: These cheap, affordable economy cars were just the thing to put Chrysler back in black. Earlier versions could be powered by the optional Mitsubishi Astron 2.6-liter, four-cylinder ( That actually HAD “Hemi 2.6” badging ), but for 1988, the choices boiled down to either a 93 hp, 2.2 Chrysler built four-cylinder, or a 96 hp, 2.5 version of the same powerplant with an extra 13 pound-feet of torque.

Why I would want one: Actually, I’d love a pristine example of one. They are a piece of automotive history that any true car fan should have in their collection. No foolin’.

Fun fact: Although the K car was the butt of many jokes, Dodge laughed all the way to the bank with the reward of higher sales. The division volume rose from 309K in 1980 to nearly 341K the next year. By the 1985 model year, Dodge realized its dream goal of a half-million sales.
