The Vicki Soto 5k

The Vicki Soto 5k

Victoria Soto was a passionate teacher who tragically lost her life protecting her students at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. In her honor, the Vicki Soto Memorial Fund, Inc. was created, which is supported annually by the Vicki Soto 5k. This event has taken place through the picturesque Lordship section of Stratford, CT Vicki’s hometown. This year the race is back in Bridgeport!

The 13th Annual Vicki Soto 5K is a family-friendly walk/run that will take place on Saturday November 1st at Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater in Bridgeport.

On race day, all who join can expect a well-organized and inspiring event. The event includes a 5K run/walk on a USATF-certified race route that will take participants from the amphitheater through Seaside Park, with picturesque views of the Long Island Sound.

The post-race celebration features music, food & refreshments and family-friendly activities for all participants and spectators who purchase a wristband. The atmosphere will be one of positivity and encouragement, with volunteers and supporters cheering on the participants every step of the way.

It’s important to highlight that all proceeds from the event go directly to the Vicki Soto Memorial Foundation. This 5013c nonprofit supports educational initiatives, scholarships for future educators, and community outreach. By participating in the 5k, runners and walkers make a meaningful contribution to these important causes and show their support for the local community.

The event is hosted by Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity (S.H.O.P.)

Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity seeks to promote the Village as a family-friendly, pedestrian-oriented community that celebrates Sandy Hook’s unique historic heritage and beautiful natural setting.

Sandy Hook was the first settlement beyond the village of Newtown, The quaint little settlement that we know now started to form shortly after the first Gristmill was built on the Pootatuck River to utilize the water power of the substantial river. The village center businesses opened to serve the workers located here to run the many industrial endeavors that followed.

In a statement from Michael Burton, S.H.O.P. President “The Heritage Park project has been 6 years in the making. It is a partnership between the Town, S.H.O.P., and many generous donors. Collectively, we are transforming a blight into a beautiful asset to the community. It will increase everyone’s property value and give the business community the ability to increase their volumes as a result of increased parking and recreational space.”

HISTORY & PURPOSE

The Heritage Park & Trail in Sandy Hook. is a community space on a piece of town-owned property that we lease for $1/year. The park will include a pavilion, 30 public parking places, and a green space that extends down to the river. S.H.O.P. continues fundraising for Phase Two of the project The Heritage Trail.

S.H.O.P. Board members will be on hand to showcase our initiatives for Heritage Park, and concert-goers will have an opportunity to make donations to support the project.
