AJ's Car of the Day: 1969 Pontiac GTO Convertible

Car: Pontiac GTO Convertible

Year: 1969

What makes it special: It was the second year for the fully redesigned Pontiac GTO, now featuring a nose covered in body-colored Endura plastic, (a material Pontiac had been playing with since 1964), able to ward off low-speed impacts without chipped paint or dented metal.

What made it famous: Besides it's GTO moniker, the roster of available V8 engines to make a GTO truly your own. First came a 350-bhp base unit, followed by a 360-bhp H.O. option. The top option was the 370 hp Ram Air IV, which featured special header-like high-flow exhaust manifolds, high-flow cylinder heads, a specific high-rise aluminum intake manifold, and a large Rochester QuadraJet 4-barrel carburetor.

Why I would want one: The GTO is an iconic Muscle Car that will always stand the test of time. The 1969 model is just a beautiful muscle car, and the host of available goodies that were taken advantage of by the buying public makes it more likely to have something extra in your car that someone else with the same car may not.

Fun fact: A new model called "The Judge" was introduced. The name came from a comedy routine, "Here Come de Judge", used repeatedly on the "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In" TV show. The Judge routine was made popular by late legendary showman Sammy Davis Jr. 72,287 GTO's were sold during the 1969 model year, with 6,833 of them being The Judge.
