AJ’s “Badass Friday” Car of the Day: ’68 Shelby Cobra GT500 KR Convertible

AJ’s “Badass Friday” Car of the Day: ’68 Shelby Cobra GT500 KR Convertible

Car: Shelby Cobra GT500 KR Convertible

Year: 1968

What makes it special: The initials KR stood for “King of the Road,” and after Carroll Shelby’s GT500 for 1967, the natural progression was the hotter version of the 428 Police Interceptor V8, stuffed into a Ford Mustang.

What made it famous: 1968 was the first year for a Shelby convertible, and was dressed up with all the Shelby necessities, with its own fiberglass nose panels, fiberglass hood with functional scoops and air-extraction vents, decorative body-side intakes, rear spoiler and sequential turn signal taillights. A padded rollbar with inertia reel shoulder harness, gauges, and woodgrain applique dressed up the interior. The KR500 428 V8 was low-rated at 335bhp, but actually had more than was rated. It had Shelby’s diecast aluminum rocker covers and a painted Ram-Air air cleaner.

Why I would want one: It’s probably one of the most iconic Shelby products of all time.

Fun fact: After Shelby’s Cobra Roadster died after the 1967 model, Carroll Shelby used the name for his Mustang creations.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Super-Sport

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Super-Sport

Car: Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Super-Sport

Year: 1965

What makes it special:  The Chevelle was produced by Chevrolet from 1964 through 1977 through three generations, and the A-Body platform was one of Chevrolet’s most successful models. It was made in a coupe, sedan, convertible and station wagon body style, and Super-Sport models were produced through the 1973 model year.

What made it famous: The Super-Sport was Chevrolet’s first entry into the Muscle Car battle, distinguished by a Malibu SS badge on the rear quarter panel. The Super-Sport Package was available on the upscale Malibu two-door Hardtop and convertible models, and added special exterior brightwork with “SS” emblems and 14 inch full-disc hubcaps taken from the Impala SS model. A floor console hosted an optional Muncie Aluminum 4-speed manual or Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission. The SS also was equipped with a four-gauge cluster, and an optional dash-mounted tach. The 220 hp, 283 cu in V8 was rated the same as the Chevy Power-Pak 283 V8 of 1957, and mid-1964, you the Chevelle could be had with either the 250 or 300hp, 327 cu in V8. Both featured a 4-barrel carb and 10.5:1 compression, and for 1965, Chevrolet added the 350hp, L-79 327 as a regular production option V8.

Why I would want one: It has stunning good looks, is perfect size, and the SS option made it quite the performer.

Fun fact: The Chevelle also provided the platform for the Monte Carlo model beginning in the 1970 model year.

AJ’s Car of the day: ’68 Plymouth Fury Convertible

AJ’s Car of the day: ’68 Plymouth Fury Convertible

Car: Plymouth Fury Convertible

Year: 1968

What makes it special: The Fury was produced by Plymouth for the 1955 through 1989 model years, and was a sub-series of Plymouth’s Belvedere model. Throughout its run, it went back and forth from the full-sized to mid-sized car levels.

What made it famous: After getting a restyle for the 1965 model year, Fury for 1968 got only some minor front end grille and rear taillight trim updates, side marker lights and shoulder belts, with the exception of the convertible model. The standard powerplant was the 318 cu in V8, or 225 cu in “Slant-Six.” There were seventeen different exterior colors available for the Fury that year.

Why I would want one: Love the stacked headlights look, love the drop top.

Fun fact: The last of the Fury line rolled off out of the factory in 1989.
