AJ’s Car of the Day: 1961 Cadillac Coupe De Ville

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1961 Cadillac Coupe De Ville

Car: Cadillac Coupe De Ville

Year: 1961

What makes it special: Originally a trim level, the DeVille became a separate model of GM’s Cadillac Division. The 1949 Coupe de Ville, a pillarless 2-door Hardtop body style was the very first year to bear the name, and was a trim level above Cadillac’s Series 62 Luxury Coupe.

What made it famous: Restyled for the 1961 model year, the series also was re-engineered. It now boasted a slanted back grille, sitting between twin headlights. New forward slanting front roof pillars and non-wraparound windshield was featured too. DeVille models featured front designation scripts and a lower body skeg trimmed with a thin, 3/4 length spear molding running from just behind the car’s front wheel opening all the way to the rear of the body. Standard on the DeVille was power brakes, power steering, an automatic transmission, dual back-up lights, windshield washer, dual-speed wipers, wheel coverings, fender skirts, outside mounted rearview mirror, vanity mirror, oil filter, power windows and 2-way power seats. 4-barrel induction systems were the only power choice and dual-exhaust were no longer available.

Why I would want one: I love the crisp lines, the menacing look of the slanted back grille. It’s one of the most stylish cars of the early 1960’s.

Fun fact: The “DeVille” name is from the French “de la ville” or “de ville” which means “of the town.”

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable Hardtop

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable Hardtop

Car: Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable Hardtop

Year: 1957

What makes it special: Ford Motor Division’s Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable model was basically a convertible that featured a retractable Hardtop. Made for model years 1957 through 1959, its name was changed over to Galaxy Skyliner just after production began on the 1959 models. It’s “Hide-Away Hardtop”

was a completely unique feature to the Ford products, and could not be had on Continental, Lincoln, Mercury or Edsel sister Ford models.

What made it famous: The Skyliner was given a complicated mechanism that enabled it to fold down the front portion of its roof, and retract it under the rear trunklid. No hydraulics were used in regular convertibles of that time. It had seven reversible electric motors, four jack lifts, series of relays, ten limit switches, ten solenoids, four locking mechanisms for its roof, and two for the rear trunklid. The car’s fuel tank was placed vertically in back of its rear seat, giving the car added safety in the event of a rear-end collision. Power for the 1957 Ford came from a choice of a 190hp, 272 cu in, 200, 205 or 212hp 292 cu in, or 245hp, 312 V8, mated to your choice of a 3-speed, or 3-speed with overdrive manual, or 3-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmissions.

Why I would want one: The Skyliner Retractable is a design icon, and was a huge leap forward in automotive technology. Lower production numbers make this fairly rare, and highly collectible.

Fun fact: A 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Retractable had a supporting role in the 1990 summer blockbuster movie “Ford Fairlane,” starring comedian Andrew “Dice” Clay.

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1953 Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible

AJ’s Car of the Day: 1953 Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible

Car: Oldsmobile Super 88 Convertible ( Car shown currently at Dragone Classic Motorcars in Orange, CT )

Year: 1953

What makes it special: The Oldsmobile division of General Motors produced the Super 88 as a full-sized offering from model years 1949 to 1999, and it was the top seller through 1974. In the years 1949-1951 it was the company’s image leader and one of their best performers because of its small size and a combination of light weight and advanced overhead-valve, high compression V8. With an engine destined for the larger, more luxury 98 series, it also replaced the straight-8 of prior years. Having the larger, high performance V8, it is considered by many to be the first “Muscle Car,” but as always that title has been disputed.

What made it famous: By the 1953 model year, the base 88 was re-named the “Deluxe 88” for only that year, while “Super 88” was still the more upscale version. It’s engine and transmission choices were still the same as the 1952 model year. A fire that destroyed GM’s Hydra-Matic transmission plant forced GM to build thousands of cars with the two-speed Dynaflow transmissions until services could be resumed at a new locale. New options for the Super 88 for 1953 were Frigidaire a/c, power steering and power brakes.

Why I would want one: I like the fact that you don’t see many of these, so for those who want to stand out, this is a perfect way to do it. This is also a very stylish performance convertible.

Fun fact: Among the great successes of the 88 series was the song “Rocket 88,” considered the very first Rock & Roll record.
